When thinking about the placement of water loving plant species such as water chestnut and blueberries, it is beneficial to home them near the edge of a water feature such as a pond or grey water system.
A whole day is usually given to the study of pattern in a permaculture design course. If we take a 1/4 acre circular pond and change the shape of the edge to a crenelated pattern (see photo above), we can double the number of plants that can be planted on the edge of the same sized 1/4 acre pond. COOL!
If we move our thinking to land and replaced the pond with garden beds and fields, the same effect (or variation) is possible for land based species. Diamond pattern plantings, keyhole gardens, and mandala gardens are great examples.
